James Maddison scored the only goal of the game on his return from injury, leading Tottenham to a crucial 1-0 win over Premier League rivals Manchester United.
The 13th-minute goal came after United’s keeper Andre Onana parried a shot from Lucas Bergvall, with Maddison in the right place to tap in the rebound. Maddison, who had been sidelined for nearly a month due to a calf injury, made an immediate impact on his return.
Although United had some chances to equalize—most notably when Alejandro Garnacho fired over the bar when one-on-one with the goalkeeper—Tottenham controlled the game to secure their first win in three matches. The win eases the pressure on manager Ange Postecoglou, lifting Spurs to 12th in the Premier League, just above United.
Meanwhile, Ruben Amorim’s injury-hit United side continues to struggle, suffering their third defeat in four league games. United’s loss sees them drop to 15th in the table, still 12 points clear of the relegation zone.
Before the match, over 1,000 Tottenham fans protested against the club’s ownership and chairman Daniel Levy.
Maddison and Tel Impress for Spurs
Tottenham has faced a difficult run of form, mainly due to numerous injuries to key players. However, with key figures like James Maddison and goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario returning to action, Spurs showed signs of improvement.
Maddison, scoring his first Premier League goal since September, was in the right place at the right time after Onana’s save. Vicario, returning from a broken ankle, was solid in his first game back. Long-term absentees like Brennan Johnson, Destiny Udogie, and Wilson Odobert were also back on the bench.
Despite the win, Tottenham struggled to maintain control, especially in midfield, with United creating opportunities to equalize. However, manager Ange Postecoglou will take any victory after a series of disappointing results.
Depleted United Put in Wasteful Display
While Tottenham seems to be recovering from their injury crisis, Manchester United’s situation continues to worsen. United suffered yet another blow as top scorer Amad Diallo was ruled out for an extended period due to an ankle injury. With several key players also sidelined, including Kobbie Mainoo, Manuel Ugarte, and Toby Collyer, United had to make do with a weakened squad.
Casemiro made his first start since December 30, but the 32-year-old struggled to cope with Tottenham’s attacking trio. United’s bench was made up mostly of teenagers, with 17-year-old striker Chido Obi making his debut in the final minute of the game.
Despite possessing attacking talent, United wasted chances to level the game, with Garnacho missing a prime opportunity in the first half and Vicario denying him in the second. The defeat marks United’s 13th loss of the season and their ninth under Amorim’s stewardship since November.
