Mohamed Salah has revealed that this year could be his final season with Liverpool, stating that no one from the club has approached him about renewing his contract.
The 32-year-old, whose current deal with Liverpool is set to expire next summer, found the back of the net during the Reds’ commanding 3-0 victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday.
After the match, Salah admitted that he approached the game as if it could be his last appearance at Old Trafford.
“Heading into the game, I was thinking, ‘this might be the last time,'” Salah shared in an interview with Sky Sports. “No one at the club has spoken to me about a new contract, so I’m treating this season as my last and will see what happens at the end of it.”
Salah also expressed that he feels liberated to play football without any distractions, leaving his future open-ended. “I feel free to play, and we’ll see what next year brings.”
Arne Slot on Salah’s new contract
When questioned about Salah’s comments, Liverpool manager Arne Slot downplayed any speculation, saying, “There are a lot of uncertainties, but right now, he’s one of ours, and I’m very happy with that. He performed exceptionally well today. I don’t discuss player contracts, but I could talk endlessly about how well Mo played.”
In July 2022, Salah signed a three-year extension with Liverpool, reportedly becoming the highest-paid player in the club’s history, earning more than £350,000 per week. Last September, Liverpool rejected a £150 million bid from Al-Ittihad for the Egyptian star.
Salah, who has now scored in each of Liverpool’s opening three matches this season, had another record-setting performance at Old Trafford:
- Salah has contributed to 17 of Liverpool’s last 23 Premier League goals against Manchester United, with 11 goals and 6 assists. He holds the record for the most goal involvements against the Red Devils by any player in the competition.
- He has scored 10 goals in nine appearances at Old Trafford across all competitions, becoming only the second player to net 10 or more goals at a single away ground for Premier League clubs since 1992-93, following Alan Shearer (10 at Elland Road).
- Salah is the first player to score in five consecutive away matches against Manchester United in the Premier League.
The victory over their long-time rivals leaves Liverpool in second place in the Premier League standings, trailing Manchester City only by goals scored.
Reflecting on the match, Salah said, “It’s a fantastic result. Everyone knows how important this derby is for the fans and the city. We have to keep this momentum going if we want to compete for the league title.”
He added, “I’m pleased to have been involved in three goals today. The manager encourages us to press high, and we capitalized on a few mistakes, which was part of our strategy.”
Salah also noted the similarities between Arne Slot’s approach and former manager Jürgen Klopp’s system, saying, “With Jurgen, we always played with high pressure to regain the ball quickly. It feels quite similar now, as the new manager has his own system, and we’re adapting to it.”
