Manager Ruben Amorim has revealed that there will be “clarification” regarding his anticipated transfer to Manchester United following Sporting’s match against Estrela on Friday. Until the international break scheduled from November 11 to 19, Amorim is expected to stay with the Portuguese club Sporting.
There remains ambiguity over whether a deal has been finalized for Amorim to take the managerial role at Old Trafford, following the dismissal of Erik ten Hag on Monday. Sporting currently holds an unbeaten record in their league season, leading by three points ahead of Lisbon rivals Benfica.
On Tuesday, Sporting secured a 3-1 victory over Nacional in the Portuguese League Cup, but Amorim acknowledged that the ongoing speculation surrounding his future has affected his players. “I know my players well, and they were understandably anxious about the news, especially with several tough games coming up,” he said. “They know I will always defend them, but there are things beyond my control.”
Van Nistelrooy’s Determination to Support United in Interim Role
Ruud van Nistelrooy, newly appointed as Manchester United’s interim manager, held his first press conference on Thursday. The former United striker mentioned that he expects his tenure to be brief and that he anticipates leading the team for their upcoming Premier League clash against Chelsea on Sunday.
“I felt called to help in this situation, especially after Erik [ten Hag] had to leave,” Van Nistelrooy expressed. “While it was disappointing, we now have to focus on delivering a win for the fans and those watching around the world.”
Van Nistelrooy also recounted conversations with Ten Hag and Sir Alex Ferguson. He shared that Ten Hag was “very disappointed” but proud of his achievements, including the two cups he won with United. Regarding Ferguson, Van Nistelrooy appreciated the legendary manager’s encouragement, particularly ahead of the Chelsea match.
Negotiations and Official Confirmation Awaited
“It’s a negotiation between two clubs, and it’s never straightforward,” Amorim, 39, commented, highlighting the complexity of the discussions. Sir Dave Brailsford, a United board member, hinted at a deal being near completion, yet Sporting officials maintain that talks are ongoing with no final agreement in place.
Manchester United has refrained from making any official statement. Amorim reiterated that the situation would be clearer following Friday’s game: “By tomorrow, we should have a decision.”
Sporting’s schedule remains packed, with a crucial Champions League match against Manchester City on Tuesday and a league game with Braga on November 10 before the European Nations League break.
