Manuel Neuer Announces Retirement from International Football, Expresses Pride and Gratitude

Manuel Neuer, the legendary goalkeeper for Germany and Bayern Munich, has officially announced his retirement from international football

Manuel Neuer, the legendary goalkeeper for Germany and Bayern Munich, has officially announced his retirement from international football, bringing an end to a remarkable 15-year career with the national team. Neuer, who earned 124 caps for Germany, is the latest in a series of veteran players to step down, following Ilkay Gundogan’s announcement just two days prior and Thomas Muller’s decision last month. Toni Kroos, who had previously retired from football altogether, also leaves a significant void in the squad.

Neuer’s international journey began 15 years ago when he made his debut in a friendly match against the United Arab Emirates. Over the years, he became a cornerstone of the German national team, playing a pivotal role in their 2014 FIFA World Cup victory—their first World Cup win since West Germany’s 1990 triumph. His final appearance for Germany came during a Euro 2024 quarter-final defeat to eventual champions Spain, on home soil.

Head coach Julian Nagelsmann now faces the challenge of restructuring the national team ahead of the UEFA Nations League, with several seasoned players stepping down. Marc-Andre ter Stegen, currently with Barcelona, is the frontrunner to take over as Germany’s first-choice goalkeeper.

In a heartfelt Instagram post, Neuer reflected on his decision to retire from international football, stating: “After over 15 years and 124 national games, my career in the German national football team ends today. Anyone who knows me, knows that I didn’t make this decision lightly. After many intense and long discussions with my family and friends, I have decided that right now is the right time to close my chapter.”

He continued, “Looking back today, I am filled with pride and gratitude. Not least because on the 13th July 2014 we were able to fulfil our big dream and together became world champions in Brazil. For a total of 7 years and 61 games, I was allowed – up to my injury – to lead the German national team as captain on the field. An honour that I appreciated every time.”

Neuer concluded his message with a simple “thank you,” expressing his love for wearing the national jersey.

As Euro 2024 approached, there was speculation about whether Neuer would continue as Germany’s starting goalkeeper ahead of Ter Stegen. However, Neuer played throughout the tournament, delivering several standout performances, including in the last-eight defeat to Spain, which ultimately marked the end of his international career.

With one year remaining on his contract at Bayern Munich, Neuer will continue his club career under the management of former Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany, who now leads the Bavarian giants.
