Madueke Confident in Chelsea’s Unity Upon Fernandez’s Return

Noni Madueke has expressed confidence that “everything is going to be fine” when Enzo Fernandez re-joins Chelsea’s squad, despite ongoing disciplinary issues related to alleged racism.

Fernandez is scheduled to rejoin the team on Monday, 29 July, following accusations of “uninhibited racism” by teammate Wesley Fofana. The French Football Federation condemned footage of a “racist and discriminatory” song sung by players after Argentina’s Copa America win, questioning the heritage of France’s black and mixed-race players.

Fernandez has apologized both publicly and directly to his Chelsea teammates, including six French players of African descent. The club has initiated an internal disciplinary process, and FIFA has launched an investigation.

Madueke, who played in the 2-2 draw against Wrexham in new Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca’s first pre-season match, emphasized that the team will handle the situation internally. “That’s something that’s between us players,” said Madueke, 22. “Enzo is going to come back and join his team again and everything is going to be fine.”

Maresca had earlier stated on Chelsea’s pre-season tour that the matter was “already clear and clarified” and anticipated “no problems at all.” Team captain Reece James is prepared to mediate if necessary, as Chelsea continues their US tour with upcoming matches against Celtic, Club America, Manchester City, and Real Madrid.

Madueke, typically a right-winger, noted the team’s focus on adapting to Maresca’s style of play, a shift from former manager Mauricio Pochettino. “You’ve got to stay high and wide and be very patient at times [as a winger],” he said. “It’s about staying high and waiting for that killer pass when you can go and do real damage. It’s about being patient and waiting for the opportunity to run and do my stuff.”
