Liverpool are exploring the possibility of signing Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi as they seek their first acquisition under new manager Arne Slot.
Zubimendi, who was part of the victorious Spain squad at Euro 2024, replaced Manchester City‘s Rodri as a second-half substitute in the final where Spain defeated England 2-1.
The 25-year-old midfielder has been with Sociedad since 2011 and has a release clause of 60 million euros (£51.5 million).
Last season, Zubimendi was instrumental in Sociedad’s sixth-place finish in La Liga, scoring four goals in 31 appearances. The team also reached the Champions League round of 16 in the 2023-24 season before being knocked out by Paris Saint-Germain.
If the transfer goes through, Zubimendi would be the first signing under Slot, who succeeded Jurgen Klopp at Anfield.
Zubimendi has often spoken of his admiration for former Spain international Xabi Alonso, who also played as a holding midfielder. Alonso began his career at Sociedad before joining Liverpool in 2004.
In recent years, Alonso has managed Sociedad’s B team and is currently the manager of German club Bayer Leverkusen.
