Ligue 1, officially known as Ligue 1 McDonald’s for sponsorship reasons, is the top professional football league in France. Managed by the Ligue de Football Professionnel, the league features 18 clubs (as of the 2023–24 season) and operates a system of promotion and relegation with Ligue 2. The season runs from August to May, with each team playing 34 matches (home and away against each other club). Most games are held on Saturdays and Sundays, with some on weekday evenings. The league takes a two-week winter break around Christmas.

Ligue 1 was established on 11 September 1932 as National, renamed Division 1 after a year, and finally became Ligue 1 in 2002. Paris Saint-Germain is the most successful club with 12 league titles, while Lyon holds the record for most consecutive titles with seven from 2002 to 2008. Saint-Étienne was the first club to reach ten titles. Marseille has spent the most seasons in Ligue 1 (73), and Paris Saint-Germain holds the record for the longest continuous presence (50 seasons from 1974 to the present). Nantes boasts the longest unbeaten streak (32 matches) and the fewest defeats in a single season (one in 1994–95), as well as the longest home unbeaten run (92 matches from May 1976 to April 1981).

The 2023–24 season saw the league reduced to 18 teams, with four teams relegated from the previous season and only two promoted from Ligue 2. Paris Saint-Germain won their record 12th title in the 2023–24 season. Notably, Monaco’s participation makes Ligue 1 a cross-border competition. As of 2024, Ligue 1 is ranked fifth among European national leagues, behind the Premier League, La Liga, Serie A, and the Bundesliga.
