Jurgen Klopp, the 57-year-old former Liverpool manager, has been named the global head of soccer at Red Bull, starting his new role on January 1, 2025.
In an Instagram post, Klopp stated, “A few months ago, I mentioned that I don’t see myself coaching from the sidelines anymore, and that remains true. However, my passion for football and working continues, and Red Bull provides the ideal platform for me to stay involved.”
Red Bull, known for its energy drinks, also has a strong presence in football. It owns several clubs, including RB Leipzig in Germany’s Bundesliga, Red Bull Salzburg in Austria, New York Red Bulls in Major League Soccer, and Brazil’s Red Bull Bragantino. Additionally, Red Bull took a minority stake in Championship club Leeds United and became the club’s main shirt sponsor earlier this year.
Although Klopp will not be involved in the day-to-day running of these teams, he will advise on key areas such as playing style, transfer strategies, and coaching development. Klopp expressed his excitement, saying, “I want to share my experience accumulated over the years. While there are many successful managers, my journey has involved fighting for promotions, titles, and trophies—sometimes succeeding, sometimes failing—but always learning from the process. Now, I look forward to learning even more.”
Oliver Mintzlaff, CEO of corporate projects and investments at Red Bull, praised Klopp, saying, “Jurgen Klopp is one of the most influential figures in global soccer. His expertise and leadership will be pivotal in shaping Red Bull’s soccer strategy.”
Klopp enjoyed immense success with Liverpool, winning eight trophies in nine years, including the Premier League and Champions League. His managerial career began in 2001 with Mainz, followed by Borussia Dortmund, where he won two Bundesliga titles and reached the 2013 Champions League final. Klopp resigned from Dortmund in 2015 before taking over at Liverpool later that year.
Red Bull is not only a force in football but also actively invests in other sports like ice hockey, motorsports, and extreme sports. In Formula 1, its Red Bull Racing team currently holds both the drivers’ and constructors’ titles.
A press conference to formally announce Klopp’s new role at Red Bull will be held in mid-January.
