Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has committed his future to the club by signing a new contract that will keep him at Old Trafford until June 2027, with an option for an additional year.
The Portuguese midfielder has been a key figure for United, scoring 79 goals and providing 67 assists in 234 appearances since joining from Sporting Lisbon in January 2020 for £47 million. His previous contract, signed in 2022, was set to expire in 2026.
“Everyone knows how much Manchester United means to me. I’m excited about what the future holds and am eager to lead this team forward,” Fernandes expressed. “I understand the responsibility that comes with wearing this shirt and the level of commitment required to represent this great club.”
Fernandes took over as United’s club captain in July 2023, replacing Harry Maguire. Despite facing criticism at times from former United captains Gary Neville and Roy Keane, manager Erik ten Hag has continued to show confidence in the midfielder.
Fernandes emphasized that he would not have signed the new contract if he didn’t believe his “best moments in a United shirt are still ahead.”
“I’ve already had many special moments here, like hearing my name sung from the Stretford End, scoring a hat-trick against Leeds, leading the team at Old Trafford on European nights, and lifting trophies at Wembley,” Fernandes added. “From my conversations with the football leadership and the manager, it’s clear that everyone is determined to compete for major trophies in the coming years.”
Although Fernandes wasn’t classified among United’s ‘untouchable’ players this summer, a potential sale was only ever likely if an irresistible offer had been made, which did not happen.
The player had previously hinted at uncertainty regarding his future before May’s FA Cup final, noting that he wanted his expectations to align with those of the club.
