Borussia Dortmund (BVB)

Ballspielverein Borussia 09 e. V. Dortmund, commonly known as Borussia Dortmund (BVB), is a German professional sports club based in Dortmund, North Rhine-Westphalia. It is renowned for its men’s professional football team, which competes in the Bundesliga, Germany’s top football league. The club has secured eight league championships, five DFB-Pokals, one UEFA Champions League, one Intercontinental Cup, and one UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup.

Founded in 1909 by eighteen football players from Dortmund, the football team is part of a large sports club with over 189,000 members in 2023, making it the fifth largest sports club globally by membership. Borussia Dortmund also has a women’s handball team. Since 1974, the team has played its home games at the Westfalenstadion, Germany’s largest stadium, which boasts the highest average attendance of any football club in the world.

Borussia Dortmund’s team colors are black and yellow, earning them the nickname die Schwarzgelben. They have a historic rivalry with Schalke 04, known as the Revierderby, and also contest Der Klassiker with Bayern Munich.

During the 2010s, under Michael Zorc’s leadership, Dortmund became known for identifying and nurturing young talent, emphasizing their youth development system. As of 2024, Borussia Dortmund had the second-highest revenue among German football clubs and ranked 12th globally, according to Deloitte’s Football Money League.
