Postecoglou criticized his team’s performance, calling it “unacceptable” as Spurs gave away their comfortable lead. Despite leading with an impressive first-half display, Tottenham’s defensive collapse after halftime allowed Brighton to complete the turnaround, leaving the north London club manager “absolutely gutted.”
Speaking to Sky Sports, Postecoglou said, “It’s the worst defeat I’ve experienced here. Our second-half performance was simply not good enough. We weren’t where we needed to be, and that cost us. We got carried away with our momentum, but football can humble you quickly if you lose focus.”
The Australian coach also emphasized that it was his “responsibility” to change the negative mood in the team. Tottenham now faces a 13-day international break before their next Premier League game against West Ham United. “There’s no specific message to the players. It’s just a horrible loss, and it’s up to me to fix it,” he added.
Postecoglou also highlighted the team’s lack of competitiveness, saying, “We lost all our duels, and if you’re not competitive, things won’t go your way.” He noted the critical response after Yankuba Minteh’s goal early in the second half, which paved the way for Brighton’s rally, with Georginio Rutter and Danny Welbeck finding the back of the net soon after.
In an interview with BBC’s Match of the Day, Postecoglou reiterated, “Our second half was completely unacceptable, and we paid the price for that. We should have wrapped up the game in the first half, but we didn’t, and we got what we deserved.”
Currently, Tottenham sits ninth in the Premier League table, as Brighton leapfrogs them into sixth place following the match.
