Ronaldo Ready to Move On When the Time Comes
Portuguese football legend Cristiano Ronaldo has made it clear that while he isn’t planning to retire from international football just yet, he’s prepared for when the time comes.

At 39 years old, Ronaldo holds the record for the most caps and goals in men’s international football, with 130 goals in 212 appearances.

Ronaldo is currently part of Portugal’s squad for the upcoming Nations League matches against Croatia and Scotland. However, these games follow a disappointing Euro 2024 campaign for the forward, where he failed to score, leading some to believe that his presence hindered the team. Despite this, Ronaldo remains committed to the national team, even as he continues his club career in Saudi Arabia with Al-Nassr.

No Regrets, But Acknowledging the Future

“When the time comes, I’ll know it’s time to move on,” Ronaldo shared. He emphasized that stepping away from international football “won’t be a difficult decision” when he feels he’s no longer contributing. “If I ever feel I’m not adding value, I’ll be the first to step aside,” he stated.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner also addressed the criticism following Euro 2024, affirming that he “never considered leaving the national team,” despite the backlash. Alongside his long-time teammate Pepe, who is now 41, Ronaldo was one of the oldest players in the tournament.

Acknowledging the Changing Guard

Following Portugal’s exit from the Euros, former Portugal international Jose Fonte commented on the aging duo, suggesting that they likely understand their time with the national team may be nearing its end. “They’ve given so much to Portugal, but sometimes you have to make way for the younger generation,” Fonte remarked.

Pepe has since retired, with Ronaldo praising his exit as a dignified one, saying Pepe “left through the front door.” Ronaldo, however, has chosen to continue his international career.

Looking Ahead

Reflecting on Portugal’s quarter-final exit to France on penalties, Ronaldo noted that “people’s expectations for the national team were too high.” Last month, he also hinted at his future plans, saying, “I don’t know if I’ll retire soon, maybe in two or three years, but I’ll probably finish my career here at Al-Nassr.”

As for his eventual departure from the national team, Ronaldo shared that when the time comes, it will be a spontaneous decision, yet one that is well-considered. “I won’t announce it in advance; it will just happen,” he concluded.
