Southampton has successfully negotiated a transfer fee with Arsenal to bring England goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale on board, with the deal potentially reaching £25 million.
Ramsdale, 26, is anticipated to complete the transfer before the close of the transfer window on Friday. The Saints will initially pay £18 million, with an additional £7 million in potential bonuses.
In a post-match interview with BBC Radio Solent after Southampton’s thrilling 5-3 Carabao Cup second-round victory over Cardiff, Saints manager Russell Martin expressed his enthusiasm about the potential signing. “If it goes through, it’s incredibly exciting,” he said. “But we’ll have to wait and see. I’m sure there will be more to discuss if and when it’s finalized.”
Wolverhampton Wanderers had also been in discussions with Arsenal to sign Ramsdale, who currently serves as a backup to David Raya at the Emirates Stadium. However, Wolves withdrew from the negotiations due to the high cost of the deal.
Ramsdale played every minute of Arsenal’s league campaign during the 2022-23 season, helping them secure a second-place finish behind Manchester City. However, he later lost his starting position to Raya, who was initially on loan from Brentford and has since been signed permanently by Arsenal.
In total, Ramsdale made 78 Premier League appearances for Arsenal after his transfer from Sheffield United in 2021 for £24 million. The former Bournemouth keeper will now join a Southampton team struggling after losing both of their opening games since being promoted back to the Premier League.
Goalkeeper Alex McCarthy, 34, started the matches against Newcastle and Nottingham Forest, with both games ending in 1-0 defeats.
Ramsdale also has five caps for England, his most recent appearance being in a match against Iceland in June, which was England’s final game before the European Championship in Germany.
