“Most managers will tell you they want possession and high pressing,” Slot explained. “That’s what I want too. It’s not just about saying it; it’s about showing it on the pitch. In our pre-season matches, you could see many similarities with the style Jurgen established here. We both favor possession and intensity, both with and without the ball. Jurgen liked to be intense with the ball, which I also appreciate, but I don’t mind if we keep possession a bit longer at times.”
Slot highlighted the importance of understanding risk and reward during matches. “Sometimes the players take unnecessary risks with simple passes. It’s important to know when to push forward and when to maintain possession, especially after regaining the ball.”
Acknowledging the expectations following Klopp’s departure, Slot is mindful of the balance between excitement and tactical discipline. “We have to keep the excitement alive because nobody wants to watch a boring game. But sometimes, holding onto the ball can benefit us in the long run.”
Slot’s appointment came with the daunting task of following in Klopp’s footsteps—a manager who brought consistent success and became a beloved figure at Anfield. Although Klopp narrowly missed out on a perfect send-off with another Premier League title, the expectations remain high for Slot to build on that foundation.
When asked what success would look like for him this season, Slot emphasized the importance of effort and consistency. “The most straightforward answer is that the players and staff give everything, every day, to achieve the highest possible outcome. Last season showed how small the margins are in the Premier League. We need to ensure we’re in the best possible position to compete.”
Slot also reflected on Liverpool’s recent pre-season, which saw victories over Real Betis, Arsenal, Manchester United, and Sevilla. Despite the positive results, he remains cautious about the challenges ahead. “We played well, but there are still many areas for improvement, which is normal given that some players have only just returned. We haven’t completely changed our playing style, but there are differences that the players need to adjust to.”
As he prepares for his first Premier League season, Slot is curious about the intensity of England’s top flight. “People always talk about the intensity of the Premier League. I’m eager to see if it’s different from what we’ve experienced in pre-season. Hopefully, it won’t be too much of a shock because I’m pleased with the results we’ve had so far.”
