Manchester United have successfully completed the signing of Bayern Munich duo Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui, in a deal that could total nearly £60 million.
De Ligt, a 25-year-old centre-back, has committed to a five-year contract with the option for an additional year, while Mazraoui, 26, has signed a four-year deal, also with the potential for a one-year extension. The move sees United bolster their defensive lineup with two players who have previously thrived under the guidance of manager Erik ten Hag at Ajax.
Mazraoui is expected to be thrust into action immediately, likely filling in for the injured Luke Shaw at left-back when United take on Fulham in the Premier League on Friday at 20:00 BST. Shaw is anticipated to return after the international break.
United have agreed to a fee of £38.5 million plus £4.3 million in add-ons for De Ligt, who was a key figure in Ten Hag’s Ajax squad that reached the Champions League semi-finals in 2019. Mazraoui, who joins for an initial fee of £12.8 million with up to £4.3 million in potential add-ons, also credits Ten Hag with shaping his early career.
“Erik ten Hag shaped the early stages of my career, so he knows how to get the best out of me and I cannot wait to work with him again,” De Ligt commented. “I know what it takes to succeed at the highest level, and I’m determined to continue that record at this special club.”
Mazraoui shared similar sentiments about reuniting with Ten Hag. “It is exciting to be reuniting with him [Ten Hag] as I enter the prime years of my career. I know what he expects from his players, and I will give everything to help the group be successful.”
Mazraoui’s move to United was finalized following the departure of Aaron Wan-Bissaka, who transferred to West Ham for £15 million. Meanwhile, United had explored other options, including Jarrad Branthwaite from Everton, but after having two bids rejected, De Ligt was identified as a more experienced and financially viable alternative.
